Scoperto solo all'inizio del secolo scorso, il leopardo delle nevi vive tra le alte montagne dell'Asia centrale, generalmente tra i 1.500 e i 6.000 metri di altitudine, in un ambiente secco, roccioso, ricco di arbusti e praterie. Caccia soprattutto di notte o all'alba e le sue prede abituali sono le pecore selvatiche e le capre, compresa la pecora blu e argali. Tuttavia, vivendo in un terreno di montagna le prede sono scarse e il leopardo si ciba anche di cervi, giovani yak, asini selvatici e bestiame allo stato brado: è in grado di catturare prede tre volte più pesanti.
