Situato in territorio di Condove a ridosso del confine con il comune di Caprie, il cosiddetto castello del Conte Verde sorge su un dosso roccioso che si innalza a 387 metri sul livello del mare. Di quell'importante presidio fortificato rimangono oggi solo i ruderi, costituiti da un poderoso recinto dove si riconoscono ancora i segni di un coronamento merlato con torri angolari e lunghi tratti di una sottile cornice a dentelli in corrispondenza del cammino di ronda. Una costruzione a più piani, rivelata dall'intonacatura interna di due porzioni murarie e dalle tracce di aggancio dai solai che dividevano i diversi livelli, era affacciata sul dirupo meridionale, mentre un'altro fabbricato sorgeva nel luogo dove oggi si trova la piccola cappella dedicata all'Assunta, nata nel Settecento e conosciuta come cappella del castello. Il presidio difensivo è inserito nella rete di comunicazione delle strutture fortificate della valle. La tradizione ne assegna la costruzione ad Amedeo VI, il Conte Verde, vissuto nel XIV secolo, ma diverse testimonianze storiche rivelano l'esistenza in loco di una fortificazione molto più antica. L'area era infatti interessata dal gigantesco sbarramento delle "Chiuse", costruito dai Longobardi nel VI secolo nel punto più stretto della valle per impedire la discesa di eserciti nemici verso le loro terre. Si dice che le mura, che si estendevano dalle pendici del monte Pirchiriano al borgo di Caprie, fossero alte da sei ad otto metri e larghe da due a quattro metri; è molto probabile che toccassero anche il "castellazzo", che offriva un punto di vista privilegiato. Tale toponimo ne conferma la memoria, come del resto anche il nome di Chiusa San Michele, dove esistono ancora alcuni resti di quella potente barriera. I Longobardi furono vinti da Carlo Magno che, nel 773, riuscì ad aggirare le Chiuse ma le mura continuarono a svolgere anche in seguito per secoli la loro funzione difensiva. All'interno dei ruderi del castello l'andamento irregolare del terreno pare suggerire l'esistenza di strutture sotterranee ancora inesplorate; tra gli alberi cresciuti spontaneamente, la facciata chiara della cappella ed un grande masso erratico, che pare semplicemente posato a terra, si differenziano dal severo contesto delle rovine.
