Quando pesca un pesce piu' grande, martino ha la necessita' di tramortirlo prima di ingoiarlo. Con la posizione che ha assunto, e' come una molla precaricata. Liberera' tutta l'energia con un movimento torsionale velocissimo del collo che portera' il pesciolino a sbattere violentemente contro il posatoio. Le ali semiaperte hanno una funzione equilibratrice che impedira' al corpo di perdere stabilita'.
