Questo faggio cresce nel Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise in località Pontone, raggiungibile percorrendo la strada che da Villetta Barrea conduce a Scanno. Per le sue straordinarie dimensioni (circonferenza 8,30m altezza 21m) e il suo portamento veramente maestoso questo patriarca è il simbolo del mondo vegetale del Parco. L'enorme tronco è probabilmente originato da più fusti concresciuti da una vecchia ceppaia e poi intimamente saldati e fusi tra di loro nel corso dei secoli. La caratteristica di questa specie e di altre essenze forestali come il castagno, il carpino e alcune querce, ovvero di emettere polloni dalle radici come risposta al taglio, è alla base delle tecniche di selvicoltura "a ceduo" in uso da secoli nelle zone montane del nostro paese.
