Nome scientifico: Melitaea phoebe (Denis & Schifferm?ller, 1775) Dimensioni: Apertura alare: 34 ? 48 mm. Ali anteriori 20-24 mm Descrizione della specie: Parte superiore delle ali con colore di fondo arancione con reticolato di linee e fasce nere molto variabili. Parte inferiore bianco crema con fascia submarginale, dell'ala posteriore, gialla con macchie arancioni. Molto simile a M. cinxia, si distingue per l'assenza di macchie nere sulla parte superiore delle ali posteriori. Dimorfismo sessuale: assente. I bruchi delle ultime ovature sono svernanti. La larva si nutre di centauree, talvolta anche piantaggini. Presenta corpo grigio-nerastro con linee nere e piccoli punti bianchi; una fascia longitudinale biancastra ne percorre i fianchi. La piccola larva vive in bozzoli di seta, prima e dopo lo svernamento, nutrendosi delle foglie. Il dorso della larva è di colore nero con macchie bianche, i lati arancioni ricoperti di spine biancastre. La crisalide, solitamente la si trova sul terreno alla base delle Piante Nutrici. Piante nutrici del bruco: Centaurea spp. Stadi giovanili: le uova vengono deposte in gruppi sulla parte inferiore delle foglie. Distribuzione e habitat: E' presente nell'areale esteso sull'Europa centrale e meridionale e sul Nord Africa e Anatolia. Presente in Italia fin oltre i 2000 m; manca in Sardegna e Corsica. Specie non frequente ma non minacciata. Habitat: variabile, sia caldi e aridi prati aperti che sotto cespugli e boscaglia, 0 ? 1900 m. Periodo di attività: sfarfallamento: da metà aprile a metà giugno e da fine giugno a inizio settembre, con due generazioni annuali.
