Secondo la leggenda il vescovo Gerardo nel XI secolo subì il martirio causa una rivolta di cittadini che osteggiavano l' adozione del Cristianesimo come religione di stato. Sembra che egli venne rinchiuso in una botte che venne fatta precipitare nel Danubio lasciandola cadere dal punto dove ora c'è il monumento. L'opera eretta nel 1904 comprende un colonnato semicircolare fronteggiata dalla statua del Santo raffigurato con una croce nella sua mano destra aperta nell ?atto di benedire la città con sotto un' altra statua impersonante un ungherese convertito messo in ginocchio.
