Secondo la leggenda il vescovo Gerardo nel XI secolo subì il martirio causa una rivolta di cittadini che osteggiavano l' adozione del Cristianesimo come religione di stato. Sembra che egli venne rinchiuso in una botte che venne fatta precipitare nel Danubio lasciandola cadere dal punto dove ora c'è il monumento.
