Avila è una città spagnola, capoluogo di Provincia nella regione di Castiglia e León. Sorgendo a 1.131 m sul livello del mare, in una zona rocciosa sulla sponda destra del fiume Adaja, affluente del Duero, risulta essere il capoluogo di provincia più alto della Spagna. La storia di Avila inizia nella leggenda: secondo la mitologia Abyla era la moglie di Ercole dal quale ebbe un figlio chiamato Alcideo che avrebbe conquistato la penisola iberica e fondato una città alla quale impose il nome della madre Abyla. In effetti si sa dalle vestigia ritrovate che la zona di Avila fu abitata nel VII secolo a.C. da una popolazione celtica, i Vetoni, che la chiamarono Obila. Nel 237 a.C. Amilcare Barca si rifornì di soldati per il suo esercito facendo una leva militare dei giovani di Avila. I Romani vi installarono un accampamento militare costringendo i Vetoni ad abbandonare la città.
