E' un dipinto autografo di Jacopo Robusti detto il Tintoretto, realizzato con tecnica ad olio su tela nel 1547, misura 210 x 533 cm. ed è custodito nel Museo del Prado a Madrid. Il dipinto fu commissionato per il presbiterio di San Marcuola a Venezia. Qui sostò per pochissimo tempo perché già nel periodo del Ridolfi (1594 - 1658) venne sostituito con una riproduzione. L'opera passò poi nelle collezioni di Carlo I di Inghilterra, quindi venne acquistata da Filippo IV tramite Alonso de Càrdenas e, più tardi, trasferita in Spagna dove fu ammirata da Velàzquez all'Escorial. Nel secolo scorso venne trasferita nel Museo del Prado, l'attuale sede.
