I giardino di Campo del Moro si trovano sul sito dell'antico accampamento militare di Ben Alì, condottiero arabo ai tempi della riconquista di Madrid (1109): a questo fatto storico deriva il nome dei giardini. Situati tra il palazzo reale e il fiume Manzanarres, fanno parte del complesso dell'Alcazar Real, assieme ai giardini Sabatini. La realizzazione di quest'area verde si può far risalire all'epoca di Filippo IV, che vi fece piantare diverse varietà di alberi. Quel terreno fu principalmente utilizzato come campo di caccia, fino al regno di Filippo V, sotto il cui dominio iniziarono ad assumere l'aspetto e la funzione che hanno oggi. Diversi architetti e paesaggisti furono incaricati a questo scopo di disegnarne la struttura, facendo aggiungere decorazioni come statue e le due famose fontane: quella dei Tritoni e quella delle Conchiglie. Le modifiche più consistenti avvennero durante il regno di Isabella II, che cercò di farne ridisegnare la pianta sul modello dei giardini di Versaillers. Assieme ai giardini Sabatini, quelli di Campo del Moro circondano il Palazzo reale. Passeggiando tra i sentieri si possono vedere diverse varietà di alberi, almeno 70 specie. Alcune di queste piante hanno più di due secoli di età.
