Famiglia: Calopterygidae - Specie: Calopteryx splendens - Autore: (Harris, 1782) Dimensioni: lunghezza 45-48 mm, apertura alare 50-70 mm. Descrizione: damigella slanciata dal volo un po' traballante, vivacemente colorata con ali che si restringono gradualmente verso la base. Il maschio è blu metallico e presenta ali con fascia scura (azzurrina negli esemplari neosfarfallati) che si estende fino al nodulo. Nella specie Calopteryx virgo, con la quale può essere confusa, questa fascia oltrepassa abbondantemente il nodulo. Le femmine sono di color verde metallico con ali sfumate di verde-bruno e pterostigma bianco (pseudopterostigma). Nell'affine C. virgo quest'ultimo è più distante dall'apice dell'ala. Nel maschio lo pseudopterostigma è assente. Le zampe, in entrambi i sessi, sono completamente nere. Questo carattere la distingue da C. haemorrhoidalis nella quale almeno le tibie sono rossastre. Distribuzione e habitat: specie legata principalmente alle acque correnti. Frequenta corsi d'acqua, canali e rogge dove si rinviene numerosa. Isolati individui adulti si possono osservare anche lontano dall'acqua, nelle radure e nei boschi. Presente in tutta Italia, isole comprese, con diverse sottospecie. Periodo di volo: aprile-settembre.
