L'Euphorbia milii. Il genere Euphorbia è molto ampio ed eterogeneo, fanno parte di questo genere arbusti, piante succulente, piante con spine simili a cactus colonnari, piante con spine simili a cactus globosi; le tante specie sono diffuse un po' in tutto il globo, in Africa, Asia, America. L'Euphorbia milii è una semisucculenta, con fusti carnosi, foglie non succulente e i tipici fiori, presenti in tutte le specie di euphorbia, detti ciazi; l'Euphorbia milii è originaria dell'Africa meridionale, in natura diviene un ampio arbusto, con i fusti succulenti, legnosi o semilegnosi alla base, soprattutto negli esemplari anziani. I fusti, eretti, molto ramificati, portano grosse spine acuminate, che negli esemplari che vivono allo stato selvatico, servono per permettere alla pianta di svilupparsi attaccata al fusto di alti alberi, visto che i fusti, da soli, tendono a divenire eccessivamente deboli se crescono oltre il metro di altezza. Le foglie sono ovali, di colore verde scuro, spesso ricoperte da un sottile strato di pruina, che le rende opache; il fogliame è presente solo sui germogli, e nella parte apicale dei rami; tendono a cadere se la pianta viene coltivata in un clima molto asciutto, e invece vengono prodotte in abbondanza in caso di clima più fresco e umido. All'apice dei rami, per tutta la bella stagione sbocciano piccole infiorescenze, con fiorellini gialli sottesi da brattee di colore tipicamente rosso; esistono numerosi ibridi e varietà particolari, con brattee di colore giallo, bianco, rosato, ed anche con brattee molto ampie. Questa Euphorbia si presta molto bene a venire coltivata in appartamento, dove può capitare che continui a fiorire per tutto l'arco dell'anno.
