Il lago di Pilato è uno specchio d'acqua situato sul monte Vettore, nel massiccio e nel Parco nazionale dei Monti Sibillini ad una quota di 1.941 m s.l.m., appartenente al comune di Montemonaco, provincia di Ascoli Piceno. Nella tradizione popolare il lago è stato ed è considerato un luogo magico e misterioso. Prende infatti il suo nome da una leggenda secondo la quale nelle sue acque sarebbe finito il corpo di Ponzio Pilato condannato a morte da Tiberio. La pena non fu solo questa, ma anche la mancata sepoltura del suo cadavere. Il corpo, chiuso in un sacco, venne affidato ad un carro di bufali lasciati liberi di peregrinare senza meta e sarebbe precipitato nel lago dall'affilata cresta della Cima del Redentore. Anche per questo il lago, a partire dal XIII secolo è stato considerato luogo di streghe e negromanti, tanto da costringere le autorità religiose del tempo a proibirne l'accesso e a far porre una forca, all'inizio della valle, come monito. Intorno al suo bacino furono alzati muri a secco al fine di evitare il raggiungimento delle sue acque.
