Le Gole dell'Alcantara sono figlie dell'attività che circa 300.000 anni fa ha caratterizzato la zona che abbraccia i comuni di Castiglione di Sicilia e Motta Camastra. Sono in sostanza uno splendido canyon di origine vulcanica, attraversato dal fiume Alcantara e costituito da pareti basaltiche alte svariate decine di metri e larghe dai 2 ai 4/5 metri. A differenza da quanto sostenuto fino a non molto tempo fa, il canyon non si è formato grazie all'azione erosiva dell'acqua durata migliaia di anni. Recenti studi portano a ritenere che in realtà la sua origine è da attribuirsi ad eventi sismici che con un movimenti sussultorio-tettonici fecero letteralmente spaccare in due vecchi laghi basaltici preesistenti (originatisi appunto 300.000 anni fa dalla fuoriuscita di magma dalle fessurazioni dei basamenti pre-etnei), consentendo all'acqua del fiume di insinuarsi al suo interno. Ad avvalorare questa tesi la struttura delle pareti, intatta e spigolosa, che in certi punti assume la caratteristica forma a "cataste di legna" ed in altri a "colonne d'organo". E la particolarità delle Gole dell'Alcantara, oltre all'alveo di pietra lavica su cui scorre il fiume, consiste proprio nella struttura delle pareti, povera di silicio ma ricca di ferro, magnesio e calcio. La presenza dell'acqua del fiume e la relativa percolazione all'interno della massa magmatica causò un raffreddamento più veloce di questo strato dando origine a profonde fratture irregolari le quali, intersecandosi, formarono strutture prismatiche di varia configurazione, pentagonali ed esagonali, che richiamano incredibilmente la struttura molecolare dei materiali che la costituiscono.
