Non tutti sanno che I pulcinella di mare sono un cibo comune in Islanda, soprattutto sono parte fondamentale dell'alimentazione per gli abitanti delle isole Vestmannaeyjar. Vengono cacciati tutt'oggi con il metodo tradizionale vichingo: arrampicandosi sulle scogliere con una lunga rete chiamata hafur. Vengono poi arrostiti o affumicati e i turisti più curiosi possono assaggiarne la gustosa carne in quasi tutti i ristoranti di Heimaey (noi abbiamo declinato l`invito). Gli abitanti di Heimaey però non sono da considerarsi alla stregua di bracconieri senza scrupoli, anzi, come tutti gli islandesi vivono in armonia con la natura, sono molto attenti a questi uccelli e si prendono cura di loro. La caccia risparmia sempre i piccoli e gli esemplari che sono impegnati ad accudirli. Inoltre, in agosto, quando i piccoli si addestrano per il volo e a volte inavvertitamente finiscono nel porto, gli isolani li raccolgono e li aiutano a raggiungere il mare.
