L'Area faunistica del Lupo di Civitella Alfedena è stata istituita nel 1972 ed è la prima area faunistica del lupo in Italia Da oltre 40 anni ospita lupi in cattività che per motivi legati a precarie condizioni di salute o abbandono da parte del branco, vengono tenuti in cura. In origine l'area ospitava un branco di una quindicina di lupi discendenti da una coppia proveniente dallo zoo di Pescasseroli. Purtroppo negli anni novanta morirono tutti in seguito a una epidemia L'Area Faunistica del Lupo rimase così vuota fino a quando riprese ad ospitare tre lupi appenninici raccolti feriti e curati dal Parco. Nel giugno 2015 sono nati cinque splendidi cuccioli da Dacia e Bufera, una coppia ormai inseparabile da circa tre anni. Bufera è stato trovato durante una bufera di neve e da quel giorno vive al fianco di Dacia, nota ai frequentatori del parco per essere stata adottata dalla scrittrice Dacia Maraini Non sapevo di questa nascita e quando ho visto uscire allo scoperto il piccolo branco è stata una piacevolissima sorpresa. E' sempre sorprendente vedere gli animali e i loro comportamenti!! Portroppo, confermando le note leggi di Murphy, in quella occasione non avevo con me il cavalletto.
