La nuova chiesa è stata riedificata negli anni Venti del XX secolo (progetto dell'architetto Giuseppe Gallo), secondo uno spiccato gusto neobarocco, in sostituzione di quella più antica del XVII secolo (progettata da Carlo Morello per la Confraternita del SS. Nome di Gesù), demolita per insufficienza di capienza nel 1914. La nuova collocazione, leggermente spostata, permetteva inoltre l'inserimento di via Sant'Ottavio (tagliata nel 1924) su via Po. I lavori, iniziati nel 1919, si sono protratti sino al 1932. All'interno notevole l'altare maggiore su disegno di Bernardo Antonio Vittone (proveniente dalla chiesa precedente) e il gruppo scultoreo policromo dell'Addolorata scolpito da Giuseppe e Stefano Maria Clemente; infine, da metà novembre a metà gennaio, il presepio meccanico, composto da 200 personaggi di cui più di 100 in movimento, animati da un unico motore elettrico dell'Ottocento.
