Descrizione e storia. Il ponte dei Sospiri è costruito in pietra d'Istria, in stile barocco, e fu realizzato agli inizi del XVII secolo su progetto dell'architetto Antonio Contin figlio di Bernardino Contin per ordine del doge Marino Grimani, il cui stemma vi è scolpito. Questo caratteristico ponte di Venezia, situato a poca distanza da piazza San Marco, scavalca il rio di Palazzo collegando con un doppio passaggio il Palazzo Ducale alle Prigioni Nuove, il primo edificio al mondo costruito per essere appositamente una prigione. Serviva da passaggio per i reclusi dalle suddette prigioni agli uffici degli Inquisitori di Stato per essere giudicati. Conosciuto in tutto il mondo, è fotografato dai turisti provenienti da ogni dove, dai soli due posti dai quali è osservabile, (oltre che dalle gondole) cioè dal ponte della Canonica e dal ponte della Paglia. Gli è stato attribuito questo nome perché la leggenda vuole che, ai tempi della Serenissima, i prigionieri, attraversandolo, sospirassero davanti alla prospettiva di vedere per l'ultima volta il mondo esterno. La leggenda però è totalmente priva di fondamento, anche perché dall'interno del ponte la visuale verso l'esterno è pressoché nulla. Il termine sospiri sta ad indicare gli ultimi respiri che i condannati emettevano nel mondo libero, perché una volta condannati nella Repubblica dei Dogi non si poteva tornare indietro.
