Il Lago Nero è ha pochi metri dal Lago Bianco al passo del Bernina. Oltre al colore che li distingue è caratteristico che le acque del lago Nero fluiscono verso nord gettandosi nell'Inn e nel Danubio fino al Mar Nero, le acque del lago Bianco scorrono verso sud confluendo nell'Adda e nel Po e sfociando nell'Adriatico
