La cattedrale di Fossano dedicata a Santa Maria e San Giovenale venne costruita negli ultimi decenni del XVIII secolo, seguendo il progetto dell'architetto Mario Ludovico Quarini, sulla precedente collegiata di Santa Maria e di San Giovenale, che risaliva al XIII secolo. Consacrata il 25 settembre 1791, si caratterizza per l'imponente facciata neoclassica solcata da colonne corinzie. L'interno della Cattedrale, a croce latina con cupola e cappelle laterali, segue il progetto di Quarini mentre la decorazione è ottocentesca. Vi sono dieci cappelle al suo interno, e quattro di queste (le due nel transetto e le due mediane ai lati delle navate minori) sono disegnate in modo da apparire più importanti delle altre. L'impianto proposto da Quarini per Fossano, ha alcuni elementi in comune con il secondo progetto di Alfieri per il Duomo di Torino. Quarini si è ispirato inoltre ai progetti di Bernardo Vittone per chiese a croce latina.
