Il tempietto al centro della navata è una straordinaria invenzione barocca: concilia felicemente l'esigenza di dare risalto plastico all'umile "edicola sacra" e di rapportarla alle proporzioni ell'immensa costruzione del Santuario. L'invenzione barocca sta nell'avere saputo "compenetrare le strutture con lo spazio, quasi dissolvendole in esso" perché lo spazio barocco è dinamico: si restringe e si dilata, penetra nell'oscurità delle cappelle laterali e respira nei vestiboli degli atri e nella profonda abside di S.Rocco. Il centro della navata è il centro della scena teatrale e l'azione si svolge attorno al tempietto barocco, a partire dalla decorazione degli otto arconi, con le otto coppie di angeli che invitano il fedele a guardare in alto e lo accompagnano, attraverso i simboli e le citazioni dei profeti, fino all'incontro con il Sole di Giustizia che splende in alto nel cupolino.
