Il nome comune (Bocca di leone) deriva dalla particolare struttura delle labbra del fiore: quello mediano inferiore aderisce al superiore a chiusura della "gola". Se "strozzato" con le dita (comprimere lateralmente la corolla) le labbra sembrano aprirsi scoprendo la bocca della corolla.
