La sensazione che se ne trae, varcando la soglia, è di trovarsi subito in un luogo particolare e si viene ben presto avvolti dall'oscurità dei suoi otto convessi lati, aperti su altrettante cappelle concave, che ospitano un altare ciascuna. Non ci sono finestre a questo livello, come se il profano che ha varcato la soglia rammentasse la propria materiale condizione: è al buio, è terreno, ma per il fatto stesso che è qui, ha il compito di guardarsi attorno e di comprendere il messaggio che l'edificio gli lancia, se riesce a coglierlo. Anche i colori dei marmi sono scuri, a questo livello; una scelta non casuale. Si intuisce che il progettista abbia volutamente generato un complesso insieme di contrasti apparenti, di messaggi insiti nelle forme, nei colori, nei numeri, affinchè l'uomo di fede si senta indirizzato su un percorso di iniziazione all'Assoluto. Sul pavimento, centralmente e verticalmente in asse con la sovrastante cupola, si noterà una grande stella a otto punte, bianca, con la zona centrale in marmo rosso che a sua volta ha al centro un quadratino verde.
