In procinto di emigrare per l'ostracismo degli intransigenti cattolici che vedevano in lui sempre un carbonaro, fu presentato ai marchesi di Barolo da Cesare Balbo. Venne assunto come segretario e bibliotecario di Giulia Colbert Faletti collaborando alle attività benefiche e religiose. Nel 1851 Pellico e Giulia Colbert Faletti entrarono nel laicato francescano come terziari. Rimase a Palazzo Barolo fino alla morte. Travagliato da problemi familiari e fisici, negli ultimi anni della sua vita interruppe la produzione letteraria. Silvio Pellico morì il 31 gennaio 1854. È sepolto nel Cimitero monumentale di Torino.
