Western Australia 2014 Cable beach (pochi passi da Broome). Sapevate che in Australia ci sono i cammelli? Non si tratta di animali autoctoni. I cammelli, anzi, 20mila cammelli, hanno viaggiato dall'Africa all'Australia nel 1840. I colonizzatori pensarono che non c'era animale migliore per trasportare merci pensanti nell' outback australiano (deserto australiano). Oggi, a distanza di 150 anni, il cammello è invece il nemico pubblico numero uno del governo australiano perché continua a riprodursi ed, entro la fine di questo decennio, la sua popolazione potrebbe raggiungere il milione di individui, mettendo a dura prova la sopravvivenza dell'ecosistema del cuore rosso australiano. Negli anni, per tenere a bada questa crescita incontrollata, si è avviato un programma di culling (abbattimento mirato), che seppur controverso è riuscito a tenere sotto controllo le mandrie che vivono in libertà. Recentemente il governo però, per mancanza di fondi, ha dovuto fermare un pò questo abbattimento sistematico, ma resta il problema, perché ognuno dei 750mila animali che si muovono nel deserto mangia 15 chili di fogliame al giorno e si abbevera alle poche sorgenti d'acqua, fonti preziosissime e sacre per le comunità aborigene. Prima di chiudere questo post un'ultima nota. Ormai, la carne di cammello, in Australia, è diventata popolare quasi quanto quella di coccodrillo e quella di canguro e il mercato che vi ruota attorno è di quasi 580 milioni di euro. Ha l'aspetto del manzo, ma il sapore si avvicina di più a quello del cavallo. Se i vostri viaggi vi porteranno fino a Sydney e non solo ordinate quindi il camel-burger, è d'obbligo.
