Polyommatus icarus (Rottemburg, 1775) Dimensioni: Lunghezza ala anteriore mm. 13-17 Apertura alare: 25 - 36 mm. Descrizione della specie: Una delle più comuni farfalle europee: la parte superiore delle ali dei maschi ha un colore di fondo blu violaceo vivace con bordi marginali neri molto sottili e con corpo ricoperto da squame piliformi bianche; la parte inferiore ha colore di fondo bruno grigiastro chiaro con macchie nere e macchie marginali arancioni. La parte inferiore delle ali anteriori ha un ocello nero nella cella ed un getto basale blu. piccolo lepidottero dallo spiccato dimorfismo sessuale. Svernante allo stadio di bruco, Si può confondere con Aricia agestis e P.thersites, che però non possiedono punti neri basali sulle piaa; il maschio si può confondere con quello di P.eros, che presenta ps azzurro-argentate, e di P.bellargus, che ha ps blu-celeste lucente e frange bianche con tratti neri; la femmina con quelle di P.bellargus e di P.coridon, che hanno frange bianche con tratti scuri. Maschio: colore blu lucente con esile linea marginale nera e frange bianche Femmina: colore bruno scuro talvolta presente una sfumatura basale blu violacea. Spazi submarginali arancio e frange grigio brunastre. Nelle ali anteriori tratti discocellulari neri. Maschio-Rovescio: colore da arancio a bruno chiaro con disegno puntiforme nero contornato di bianco. Presenti due punti neri basali nelle ali anteriori. Spazi submarginali arancio e sfumatura basale azzurrognola nelle ali posteriori. Femmina-Rovescio: colore bruno chiaro con disegni simili al maschio. Stadi giovanili: il bruco è verde con una linea medio dorsale più scura e fianchi percorsi a livello degli stigmi da una fascia bianca. Sverna allo stadio di bruco, che trattiene rapporti di mirmecofilia con le formiche. Lo stadio di crisalide dura circa due settimane. Piante nutrici del bruco: Fabaceae (Lotus spp., Galega spp., Ononis spp., Medicago spp., Trifolium spp., Melilotus spp., Genista spp., Astragalus spp., Onobrychis spp., Anthyllis spp., Coronilla spp.). Distribuzione e habitat: Tutta Italia. L'areale abbraccia Europa ed Asia temperata, presente anche in Nordafrica e Anatolia. È il Licenide italiano più comune. Specie euricora, si rinviene in ogni tipo di ambiente dalla pianura al piano montano, prati umidi, sponde di ruscelli e torrenti, 0-2900 m. Periodo di attività: da luglio ad agosto con una o più generazioni annuali a seconda delle località.
