Scavato in una cava di tufo nel rione Sanità, il cimitero delle Fontanelle accoglie al suo interno decine di migliaia di ossa, circa 40.000, principalmente appartenenti alle vittime della peste del 1656, del colera del 1836, dalle ossa provenienti dalle "Terresante" e dalla gente del popolo. Si tratta di un luogo mistico, ove la vita incontra la morte, sede del "culto delle anime pezzenterie". I fedeli per richiedere una grazia alle anime pezzenterie, adottavano un teschio, pulendolo, accendendo dei lumini, circondandoli con un rosario, sperando di ottenere una grazia. Se il teschio sudava veniva interpretato come grazia ricevuta, al contrario, se non sudava, era ritenuto un segno negativo (indice di sofferenza dell'anima).
