Il salottino privato del re insieme alla sala di ricevimento , al gabinetto di Apollo e alla biblioteca costituisce il nucleo di stanze dove il sovrano continuava le sue occupazioni politiche e amministrative durante la villeggiatura. Qui egli riceveva le relazioni di ministri e funzionari importanti, ma qui - così come nella piccola biblioteca attigua e nello studio privato al secondo piano ? dedicava anche molto tempo agli studi e alle letture. Questo "gabinetto di lavoro" è sicuramente uno dei gioielli più preziosi del castello di Racconigi, nonché uno dei capolavori dell'architetto Palagi. Tutta la decorazione della stanza riprende lo stile della pittura vascolare greca e di quella etrusca. Nella volta è riprodotto il fregio della tomba etrusca "del barone", o "dei cavalli", scoperta a Tarquinia nel 1827. In quegli anni il fascino delle scoperte archeologiche si ripercuoteva nell'architettura d'interni e si arredavano i palazzi con riproduzioni di reperti antichi. Il Palagi era un ammiratore di questa tendenza, oltre che un appassionato collezionista e grande conoscitore della storia e dell'archeologia.
