La bevanda nazionale dell'Uruguay è il mate che sarebbe un decotto di erbe (leggermente eccitante) che viene sorseggiato durante la giornata. Io l'ho provato ma non mi è piaciuto molto poiché è piuttosto amarognolo. Si vedono spesso persone, sia donne che uomini di qualsiasi età, passeggiare, guidare auto (qualcuno anche moto) sorseggiando il mate; questo viene messo in un contenitore (che si chiama pure mate) quindi si aggiunge l'acqua bollente e viene fatto macerare. Man mano si beve con una specie di cannuccia in metallo e man mano si aggiunge l'acqua calda che viene conservata in un termos (ci sono anche negozi che vendono "agua caliente"). In pratica si viaggia con il mate in mano e il termos stretto nel gomito: tutto con un braccio. Volendo ci sono dei contenitori da viaggio per poter riporre il tutto mentre si cammina. Una amica del luogo mi spiegava che il mate è anche un modo per fare amicizia e per "inquadrare" una persona, ad esempio sul termos spesso vengono applicati degli adesivi della squadra del cuore, o del partito, associazioni, ecc. Mi spiegava inoltre che è così radicato l'uso del mate che loro stessi dicono che quando nasce un bambino uruguaiano questo ha già il gomito piegato per tenere il termos e il mate :)
