Knobbed Hornbill by Jonathan Rossouw sent on June 05, 2015 (9:16) by RockjumperBirdingTours. 0 comments, 387 views. Lembeh Island, Indonesia.
This colourful bird is a male Knobbed Hornbill, also known as the Sulawesi Wrinkled Hornbill, an Indonesian endemic found only in the forests of Sulawesi and the offshore islands of Buton, Lembeh, Togian and Munas. A fairly large hornbill, it is locally common in the regions it inhabits, though thanks to a human junk food and product addiction that includes large amounts of Palm Oil, its habitat is being steadily destroyed to make way for these terrible Palm Oil monocultures, with the result that the species is now listed as vulnerable. Nevertheless, there is still hope provided we act very soon to reverse this inexcusable situation, which will necessitate every single one of us boycotting any "foods" or products that contain any Palm Oil whatsoever. On a more positive note, what a great photo to set us off for the weekend! Thanks therefore to Jonathan Rossouw, who photographed this very confiding chap on the island of Sulawesi.
