Il sedum è un genere di piante succulente e "xerofile" che comprende circa 600 varietà di specie. Appartengono alla famiglia delle Crassulaceae e sono originarie di tutto l'emisfero boreale, provenienti sia da regioni fredde che temperate; alcune specie sono originarie del Messico o dell'America centrale, ma allo stesso modo si possono trovare in Africa Centrale. Parecchie specie crescono spontanee anche in Italia su muri e nei giardini rocciosi, altre vengono coltivate in vaso, sono considerate piante "rustiche" e "semirustiche" perché sopportano anche le basse temperature e a volte anche il gelo.
