Due angeli di marmo fanno da cornice all'immagine della Vergine verso la quale i torinesi nutrono una profonda venerazione, rendendola ogni anno, a giugno, oggetto di preghiera durante una processione molto partecipata. Questa immagine risultò, nel corso di ultime indagini, copia quattrocentesca a opera di Antoniazzo Romano, pervenuta nel capoluogo piemontese tramite il Cardinale Domenico Della Rovere. Il dipinto originale della Madonna con Bambino era stato, presumibilmente, portato direttamente dall'Oriente a Torino dal vescovo Sant'Eusebio. Fu più volte perso e ritrovato fino a che un cieco di Briançon venne visitato dalla Madonna che gli svelò dove si trovasse l'icona, esortandolo a cercala. Solo allora avrebbe recuperato la vista, come di fatto fu. Con molta probabilità il dipinto era stato nascosto durante il tempo eretico del vescovo iconoclasta Claudio, affinché non andasse distrutto. L'attuale Cappella delle Grazie, ricca di stucchi e affreschi settecenteschi, corrisponde al luogo dove avvenne, secondo la tradizione, il miracoloso ritrovamento, l'antica cripta eretta da re Arduino per porvi la sacra immagine. La Consolata, che allo stesso tempo è nostra Consolatrice, è patrona dell'arcidiocesi di Torino. La chiesa a Lei intitolata ha dignità di Basilica minore.
