L'interno, bellissimo, è una armonica composizione di luci e colori, grazie anche ai marmi che fanno convergere lo sguardo del visitatore al tabernacolo e soprattutto al grande quadro centrale dell'Ausiliatrice circondata da evangelisti e profeti, ideato proprio su indicazione di Don Bosco che ne parlò al pittore Lorenzone. Quest'ultimo, per realizzarlo, date le dimensioni, fu costretto a prendere in affitto per tre anni il più alto salone di Palazzo Madama. Morto don Bosco il 31 gennaio del 1888, il suo successore, don Michele Rua, avviò un progetto finalizzato all'arricchimento decorativo della chiesa dell'Ausiliatrice. Le attenzioni più sollecite furono rivolte all'altare maggiore e si decise di creare una nuova cornice al quadro dell'Ausiliatrice del Lorenzone.
