Durante il mio primo viaggio in Africa son partita da sola per perdermi nell'estremo sud del Malawi, durante una visita al villaggio di Bangula ho iniziato a fare le prime foto della mia vita con una reflex. Guardavo la gente, che non doveva aver visto molti stranieri, che mi guardava curiosa, facevo loro un cenno per capire se potevo fotografarli, mi dicevano di sì, si mettevano tutti in posa, una posa piena di orgoglio e fierezza. Poi incontro questa bambina, mi guarda, mi fa capire che sì, posso fotografarla, ma poi si abbandona alla timidezza, abbassa lo sguardo e incrocia le gambe. Mi ha così tanto emozionata che ho avuto il coraggio di farle una sola foto, nemmeno mi sono accorta che le avevo tagliato i piedi. Resta la foto che mi ha rubato il cuore, credo di aver preso il mal d'Africa grave proprio in quel preciso momento. Non la scorderò mai.
