Il nome Ornithogalum deriva dal greco ornis,che significa gallina, e gala, che significa latte,da qui il nome comune latte di gallina,per il suo latice bianco e per il colore dei suoi fiori. Tutta la pianta è nociva, in particolare il suo bulbo. L'intossicazione può avvenire per ingestione. I sintomi che si possono riscontrare alterazioni del battito cardiaco,ipotensione,nausea,vomito e nei casi più gravi la morte per arresto cardiaco. Questa bellissima pianta contiene infatti dei glicosidi cardioattivi e cristalli di ossalato di calcio.
