La Cappella, che ospitò la Sindone dal 1694, venne commissionata a Carlo di Castellamonte dal duca Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia per conservare il prezioso telo (che la famiglia sabauda costudiva da alcuni secoli) a Torino. Con il tempo i progetti vennero modificati dal figlio di Carlo, Amedeo di Castellamonte e poi dallo svizzero Bernardino Quadri. Alla fine il progetto venne affidato al Guarini che rivoluzionò il progetto basandolo su una pianta interna circolare, sopraelevata al presbiterio e comunicante direttamente con alcune sale di Palazzo Reale. (ex palazzo vescovile e futuro palazzo reale) e l'abside del Duomo di San Giovanni Battista. Poi nel 1997 il tremendo incendio. Per me il momento più emozionante della visita della Sindone a Palazzo Reale è stato passare dalla Sacrestia al vestibolo che introduce nella Cappella della Sindone:E' un luogo che ha il potere di inchiodarti a terra, anche se si vedono quasi solo impalcature e non si può fotografare.
