In concomitanza con l'Ostensione della Santa Sindone, Palazzo Reale offre un nuovo allestimento attraverso luoghi sacri e tesori sindonici. Nel salone delle Battaglie con la sua splendida volta eseguita dal pittore di corte Claudio Francesco Beaumont nell'appartamento detto "dei Quadri Moderni" sono esposti alcuni paramenti liturgici. L'appartamento venne realizzato dall'architetto Filippo Juvarra. rialzando di un piano il porticato seicentesco che chiudeva il lato nord del Cortile d'Onore, per ospitarvi la biblioteca e gli archivi del sovrano. Questi ultimi mantennero tale funzione per pochi anni infatti lo stesso architetto realizzò, di li a poco, il nuovo palazzo per gli archivi nell'area adiacente alla Regia Accademia Militare. Gli ambienti furono decorati da artisti da grande livello quali Francesco De Mura, Scipione Cignaroli, Anna Caterina Gili, Pietro Domenico Olivero, Gregorio Guglielmi e Lorenzo Pécheux ed ospitarono parte della collezioni di dipinti di artisti fiamminghi proveniente da Vienna, appartenuta al principe Eugenio di Savoia, acquistata per volere di Carlo Emanuele III. L'attuale denominazione deriva dalla collezione di dipinti ottocenteschi collocati negli ambienti, per volere prima di Carlo Alberto e poi di Vittorio Emanuele II, in sostituzione delle preziose tele confluite nella Regia Pinacoteca, la Galleria Sabauda. Le sale furono utilizzate in tempi diversi e da componenti della Famiglia Reale e come Foresteria Nobile.
