La Sindone è un lenzuolo di lino tessuto a spina di pesce delle dimensioni di circa m. 4,41 x 1,13, contenente la doppia immagine accostata per il capo del cadavere di un uomo morto in seguito a una serie di torture culminate con la crocefissione. Secondo la tradizione si tratta del Lenzuolo citato nei Vangeli che servì per avvolgere il corpo di Gesù nel sepolcro. Tradizione che, pur avendo trovato numerosi riscontri nelle indagini scientifiche compiute sul Lenzuolo, non può dirsi formalmente provata. Certamente invece la Sindone, per le caratteristiche della sua impronta, rappresenta un rimando diretto e immediato che aiuta a comprendere e meditare la drammatica realtà della Passione di Gesù.
