Jackass penguin, Simon's Town, South Africa. - The jackass penguin, named because of its donkey-like bray, is found nowhere in the world except off the coast of southern Africa. Penguin numbers have decreased by at least 90% in 60 years and this fall is continuing. This exemplar of male jackass belongs to the new mainland breeding colonies at Simon's town, where an erected fence is successfully preventing human disturbance and attacks by predators. The colony has grown to more than 100 nesting pairs in the last few years.
