Seguono contatti con varie case automobilistiche, finché nel 1959 si da il via alle trattative con BMC per la produzione su licenza dell'Austin A40, modello che si colloca in un segmento di mercato in cui Fiat è assente e che associa alla robustezza di una meccanica ormai collaudata lo stile di Pininfarina. A luglio viene firmato il contratto con BMC. Si tratta di un contratto di durata settennale, con evidenti lacune che mettono lahpqscan0041 Low Innocenti in una posizione molto svantaggiosa. L'accordo inoltre non consente l'esportazione di vetture Innocenti. Come dirà un dirigente intervistato da Marino Gamba per il suo libro sulla Innocenti, si tratta di "un contratto balordo, un accordo del c?. 7 anni sono pochi; cioè sono abbastanza all'inizio. Ma già dopo 2 o 3 anni non si possono più fare programmi seri Era un accordo che non dava nessuna sicurezza per l'avvenire Oltretutto noi non eravamo certi di essere seguiti dagli inglesi; per esempio, nessuno obbligava quelli della BMC a darci i rifornimenti nel modo pattuito". Inizialmente è previsto l'assemblaggio e la verniciatura dei pezzi forniti dall'azienda inglese, ma presto a Lambrate verranno anche stampati i lamierati per la nuova vettura. Alla fine del 1960 gli impianti sono operativi e dalle catene di montaggio, approntate sulle aree che avevano ospitato la produzione bellica, escono le prime Innocenti Austin A40. È prevista una produzione massima di 100 vetture al giorno. Nonostante gli impianti siano di nuova costruzione, la tecnologia impiegata è già obsoleta. Vengono utilizzate le tradizionali linee a pavimento , mentre le altre Case stanno procedendo alla loro sostituzione con le più innovative metodologie di movimentazione aerea delle scocche.
