Il nome Ninfa deriva da un tempietto di epoca romana, dedicato alle Ninfe Naiadi, divinità delle acque sorgive, costruito nei pressi dell'attuale giardino. A partire dal VIII l'Imperatore Costantino V Copronimo concesse a Papa Zaccaria questo fertile luogo, facente parte di un più vasto territorio chiamato Campagna e Marittima, entrò a far parte dell'amministrazione pontificia. Al tempo contava solo pochi abitanti, ma aveva assunto un ruolo strategico per la presenza della Via Pedemontana: trovandosi ai piedi dei Monti Lepini, era l'unico collegamento alle porte di Roma che conduceva al sud quando la Via Appia era ricoperta dalle paludi. Dopo l'XI secolo Ninfa assunse il ruolo di città e fra le varie famiglie che la governarono ricordiamo i Conti Tuscolo, legati alla Roma pontificia, e i Frangipani, sotto i quali fiorì l'architettura cittadina e crebbe la considerazione economica e politica di Ninfa, ricordiamo infatti che nel 1159 il cardinale Rolando Bandinelli fu incoronato pontefice Alessandro III nella Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore. Nel 1294 salì al soglio pontificio Benedetto Caetani, Papa Bonifacio VIII, figura potente e ambiziosa, che nel 1298 aiutò suo nipote Pietro II Caetani ad acquistare Ninfa ed altre città limitrofe, segnando l'inizio della presenza dei Caetani nel territorio pontino e lepino, presenza che sarebbe durante per sette secoli.
