Ho avuto anche io il 70-300 tamron e mi son tolto delle belle soddisfazioni, anzi, sono pentito di averlo venduto perché era leggero e pratico da portare in giro.
Chissà, un'indomani quasi quasi me lo ricompro 
Comunque qualche piccolo suggerimento che ti potrà essere utile (che mi è stato dato anche a me da chi pratica questo genere da più tempo):
- punto di messa a fuoco singolo centrale (è sempre il più preciso);
- messa a fuoco ad inseguimento (dovrebbe essere af-C per nikon se non ricordo male);
- chiudi di 1/3 di stop il diaframma del tuo obiettivo, portalo a 7.1 e tieni tempi rapidi (almeno 1/1000sec), piuttosto alza gli ISO se non ci stai dentro coi tempi;
- mano ferma per tenere il quadratino di messa a fuoco sempre preciso sul soggetto e tanta, taaanta pazienza

Visto che ce l'hai anche tu sai benissimo che il modulo AF in inseguimento fa un po' quello che ha voglia lui, la difficoltà per soggetti in azione è maggiore con la 6D che non con una semplice 70D o simili.
Mi fà un'invidia l'AF della cara vecchia 7D!!!

Be patient Peter, you have to try, and try, and try again!
I've also had the Tamron 70-300 and I have taken a lot of satisfaction, indeed, regretted selling it because it was lightweight and easy to carry around.
Who knows, I almost un'indomani me I buy it again: -D
However, some small suggestion that I can be useful (I was given to me by those who practice this kind longest):
- Point of focus single central (it's always the most accurate);
- Massfocus tracking (should be af-C for nikon if I remember correctly);
- Close to 1/3 stop aperture of your lens, bring it and keep 7.1 quickly (at least 1 / 1000sec), rather raises the ISO if there are inside with the times;
- Steady hand to hold the handle to focus more precisely on the subject and so, taaanta patience -D

Since you've got yourself know very well that the module AF tracking is a little 'whatwants him, the difficulty for subjects in action with the 6D is greater than with a simple 70D or the like.
I make me the envy of the good old 7D AF !!! -D
