È proprio da questa caratteristica che derivano il loro carattere effimero e strettamente dipendente dal regime pluviometrico annuale e la peculiarità della flora e della fauna che essi ospitano che includono numerose specie rare e di interesse per la conservazione. La Direttiva Habitat riconosce gli stagni temporanei mediterranei come habitat di interesse comunitario, includendoli nel gruppo delle acque dolci stagnanti con i codici 3120, 3130 e 3170*. In Sardegna gli stagni temporanei mediterranei sono localizzati principalmente nei tavolati e nelle zone pianeggianti a quote comprese tra i 10 e i 1200 m, in condizioni bioclimatiche da meso-mediterranee (temperatura media annuale: 15 °C, precipitazione annuale: 946 mm) a temperate submediterranee (temperatura media annuale: 10 °C, precipitazione annuale: 1000 mm). Occupano piccole depressioni su suoli idromorfi e su substrati rocciosi impermeabili e poco drenanti (es. granito). La profondità massima dell'acqua varia in rapporto alla morfologia del substrato e spesso, nonostante le dimensioni ridotte, è possibile riconoscere una zonazione della vegetazione in tre fasce: una esterna, una intermedia e una centrale, nelle quali si sviluppano diverse tipologie di vegetazione.
