Zerynthia cassandra or polyxena? sent on April 01, 2012 (21:30) by Ugogag. 8 comments, 1120 views.

, 1/125 f/14.0, ISO 200, hand held.

It depends on what area you took the photo ;)
I did a thesis on Zerynthia sp. and I am quite prepared :))

have observed all by himself.
this butterfly, has a very short period of flight and precise.
this year go much earlier, between 10-15days could be great, although this year it rained very little ...

roby

ps the classification of this species has been divided into Z.polyxena and Z. cassandra only recently.
it seems that here we only Z.cassandra.
a year who knows ... all evolving ...

To be precise, the photo was taken in the town of Stella.
I'm no expert but from the work of L.Dapporto, repribile of Naturamediterraneo, it seems that there is M.Beigua right on the overlap of the two species that coexist without interbreeding.
Are otherwise indistinguishable to a normal observation (so for me, but apparently one of them can be recognized ....)

ah well, then thanks for the clarification.
I just knew recently z.polyxena is dividing the species into two distinct species. I did not know the boundaries and overlaps.

Sisi .. absolutely .. Mount Beigue the two species meet, but between them there is no hybridization. Recognize with the naked eye so the species is therefore impossible because, as you've read the work of Dapporto, can be recognized by some morphological differences in the genitals :)

Let us say that this is a Zerynthia sp. and not wrong :))

Thank you all.

I saw on the forum that there are already photos of this year, from Liguria.

Saturday, rain permitting, I will take a ride ....

I would suggest a trip together, but I'm afraid it will rain, in any case, good luck, even at zerinthia ;-)
