Sulla riva destra del fiume Vilnia si estende uno dei piu' antichi sobborghi di Vilnius, Uzupis (letteralmente: Oltre il fiume). A Uzupis un tempo abitavano prostitute, gente di malaffare, poveri artigiani che avevano le loro botteghe sul torrente, i religiosi della vicina chiesa ortodossa. A partire dagli anni '90 del Novecento (attratti dai prezzi bassi)si è riempito di artisti e intellettuali, che lo stanno trasformando in un quartiere sempre piu' alla moda....e, un po' per gioco un po' per riscattarsi dalla nomea che in passato avevano di area degradata e povera, hanno fondato simbolicamente l'indipendente Repubblica di Uzupis, dotata di una propria, originale, costituzione, una bandiera (in quattro colori diversi, a seconda della stagione) ed un inno nazionale.
