L'attuale sala della Rotonda prende il nome dal Rondò di collegamento tra Palazzo Reale e Palazzo Madama, costruito dopo gli incendi che nel 1659 e nel 1667 avevano distrutto la grande Galleria eretta e decorata da Carlo Emanuele I intorno all'anno 1600. Sappiamo che nel Settecento il Rondò era utilizzato come piccolo teatro di corte prima della costruzione del Teatro Regio, avvenuta nel 1740 su progetto di Benedetto Alfieri. L'interno, che ormai presenta una pianta a T, viene ristrutturato da Pelagio Palagi come ampliamento dell'Armeria Reale ormai inaugurata nella primavera del 1837, per ospitare le ricche raccolte di armi europee ed orientali che col tempo venivano acquistate dal re. Il soffitto ligneo viene decorato al centro con Giove che fulmina i giganti di Carlo Bellosio, mentre nei tre riquadri laterali Francesco Gonin dipinge alcuni episodi della guerra di Troia: Il corpo di Patroclo difeso dagli Aiacidi, Il duello di Ettore e Aiace e Apollo nasconde Ettore in una nube per sottrarlo ad Achille (quest'ultimo episodio è andato perduto in seguito ad un incendio). L'ultimo cavallo in fondo è Favorito che è stato il cavallo personale di Carlo Alberto di Savoia, Re di Sardegna dal 1831, utilizzato durante le campagne dei moti del 1848. Il Re lo mantenne anche durante l'esilio a Porto del 1849. Dopo la morte del sovrano, avvenuta nel luglio di quello stesso anno, il cavallo venne portato a Torino e ricoverato presso le scuderie reali. Dopo la sua morte, sopraggiunta nel 1867, si decise d'inserire anche il cavallo fra gli oggetti personali militari del Re defunto depositati presso l'Armeria Reale di Torino: venne realizzata dunque da Giovanni Tamone una scultura lignea, successivamente rivestita con la pelle di Favorito.
