Dopo la morte del principe cardinale Maurizio di Savoia(1657) si susseguirono interventi decorativi per la consorte Ludovica e, a fine secolo, per Anna d'Orleans, moglie di Vittorio Amedeo II duca di Savoia. Appartamenti e giardini furono aggiornati nel 1713 da Filippo Juvarra per Carlo Emanuele III. A metà Settecento si costruirono scuderie e fabbricati di servizio. Nel 1865 Vittorio Emanuele II donò la residenza all'Istituto Nazionale per le Figlie dei Militari Italiani, attivo fino al 1975. Dal 1994 è in consegna alla Soprintendenza per i Beni Storici, Artistici ed Etnoantropologici del Piemonte. La Consulta, già nel 2002, ha promosso il restauro dell'Asse del Belvedere, contribuendo in modo significativo al recupero globale della dimora sei-settecentesca, con un investimento biennale di oltre un milione di euro. Anche in questo caso, la Consulta ha scelto un intervento mirato per restituire alla città un bene storico-architettonico di grande rilevanza, recuperato dopo anni di abbandono. L'intervento ha compreso il restauro degli apparati decorativi della "Grotta del Re Selvaggio" e il ripristino del Teatro d'Acque, cioè la rimessa in funzione dell'impianto idraulico, con canali, pozzi, cascatelle e zampilli. A completamento il recupero di alberi ed arbusti, siepi e prati; l'esecuzione di pavimentazioni in pietra, ciottoli in terra battuta e laterizio, opere da fabbro per ringhiere e parapetti. Dietro il palazzo si estende, scavato nella collina, un vasto giardino emiciclico su 3 livelli suddivisi da filari di siepi di bosso. Dal corpo centrale della facciata retrostante si sviluppa un'esedra semicircolare che racchiude una piccola vasca quadrilobata in marmo. L'ambiente dell'esedra è delimitato da un muro semicircolare su cui sono scavate 20 nicchie quasi tutte adorne di statue.
