Voluta dal Cardinal Maurizio di Savoia, edificata su progetto di Ascanio Vitozzi all'inizio del Seicento, venne ristrutturata su progetto di Juvarra che nella prima metà del Settecento prestò attenzione soprattutto alla villa in rapporto al complesso dei giardini. La residenza ducale costituì un modello per le "vigne" e le ville dell'aristocrazia e della borghesia. La villa, al centro dei giardini all'italiana, si sviluppa al Piano nobile dal grandioso salone centrale con le straordinarie scenografie di Giuseppe Dallamano, c. 1733, i dipinti di Corrado Giaquinto e Giovan Battista Crosato. Dal salone si accede agli Appartamenti Reali riccamente decorati, nei quali trova posto in modo esemplare il gusto settecentesco per le "cineserie". Lungamente abbandonato, in anni recenti sono stati realizzati importanti interventi di restauro che hanno consentito la sua riapertura al pubblico nel 2006. I piani alti ospiteranno il Centro regionale di Documentazione e Catalogazione dei Beni Culturali.
