Nel 500 Castelnuovo è capitale della Provincia di Garfagnana, una delle tre in cui era suddiviso il Ducato di Modena e Ferrara: dal 1522 al 1525 è governatore della regione Ludovico Ariosto, che nelle sale della Rocca lavora alle sue Satire ed a quei nove canti che aggiungerà nel 1532 alla terza e definitiva edizione del suo capolavoro, l'Orlando Furioso.Immediatamente attigua al corpo principale della Rocca, ospita molti concerti estivi .
