Nome scientifico: Pieris napi (Linneus 1758) Dimensioni: Lunghezza ala anteriore mm. 32-45 Apertura alare: 36 - 50 mm. Descrizione della specie: Ali con colore di fondo bianco di sopra. Parte inferiore con venature verdi evidenti. Questa specie presenta notevoli variazioni di colore e tonalità del colore di fondo, che può essere anche specifica per la generazione o addirittura per la covata. Dimorfismo sessuale: i sessi sono molto simili Maschio: Colore bianco con apice delle ali anteriori nero e piccole macchie triangolari nere lungo il bordo esterno fino alla prima nervatura cubitale. Quasi sempre presente una macchietta nera postdiscale nelle anteriori. Maschio Rovescio: Anteriori bianche con apice giallognolo e nervature parzialmente velate di scuro. Posteriori giallognole con disegno nervulare verdastro più o meno esteso. Femmina: Colore bianco con tracce di disegno nervulare nero o grigiastro. Nelle anteriori apice nero o grigiastro formato da tratti di disegno nervulare e due macchie postdiscali dello stesso colore. Macchia nera o grigiastra nella costa delle posteriori. Femmina Rovescio: Anteriori bianche con apice giallognolo e nervature parzialmente velate di scuro. Posteriori giallognole con disegno nervulare verdastro più o meno esteso. Stadi giovanili: sverna allo stadio di crisalide, sempre all'interno o in prossimità di Brassicaceae coltivate o selvatiche; gli adulti della prima covata in genere emergono alla fine di aprile, mentre quelli della seconda covata emergono ai primi di luglio. Le uova vengono deposte singolarmente sulla parte inferiore delle foglie della pianta nutrice e si schiudono in circa una settimana. I bruchi, verdastri con linee gialle ai fianchi, compiono quattro mute e durano dalle tre alle quattro settimane. Le crisalidi, verdi e marrone chiare, durano all'incirca dieci giorni, a parte quelle svernanti. Piante nutrici: Brassicaceae (Brassica spp., Alliaria spp., Cardamine spp., Nasturtium spp.) Raphanus raphanistrum, Arabia turrita, Sinapsi Avensis. Distribuzione e habitat: paleartica: molto comune in Europa, più scarso in luoghi aridi, assente dalle isole atlantiche, dalle isole Shetland e dalla Sardegna. Specie con tendenze migratrici, frequenta prati, cespuglieti e radure dal piano basale a quello montano fino a circa 1600 metri s.l.m. Periodo di attività: tre generazioni annuali con sfarfallamento in marzo-aprile, maggio-giugno e agosto-settembre
